Mission Statement

We've all had the experience of walking into a large store and being confused by the huge selection, perhaps wanting someone with the background knowledge who can help us make a wise choice. The Pet Expertise Experts personally select and test the items available for purchase on the site to find those that are as safe and effective as possible. The right products can make a big difference!

We have problem solving sections with product recommendations and free articles written by our owner, Jess Rollins.

We strive to choose products that are high-quality, safe and effective. Our treats are the most natural we could find and many are free-range or organic.

We have plans to add parrot and cat departments and Experts to the store. 

The business was first opened under the name Creature Teacher in 2001 and enjoyed a great reputation. Upon moving to CA and expanding to offer more products, the name was changed to Pet Expertise in 2003.

Pet Expertise's Owner and Dog Expert 

Before becoming a professional dog trainer and business owner, Jess Rollins was a successful Masters-level research scientist, studying the brain. "I've taken the scientific method to people's backyards and it works! I have always lived with and loved animals and making a difference in the lives of families sure beats analyzing data at the computer!", says Jess.

Jess has been training dogs and their people since 1999. She offers behavioral counseling for problems such as barking, chewing, separation anxiety, jumping up, mouthing and nipping, pulling on the leash, phobias, shyness, and others. Our Dog Expert is also an experienced groomer, able to do all breed haircuts and specializing in aggressive dogs.

Jess Rollins' Prefered Dog Training Methods:

• Motivate the dog with treats, verbal praise, petting, play and freedom.

• Teach using lures, shaping, a reward marker and treats.

• Discourage Behavior by preventing it, ignoring it or replacing it with an incompatible behavior.

• Lead with a head harness, front-attachment harness, regular buckle collar, Martingale collar or body harness and regular 6-foot lead. I do not use choke or pinch collars or any other method that causes pain.

• My Influences and Philosophy: I follow the work of Karen Pryor, Jean Donaldson and others. My goal is to aid in the growth of a healthy, loving and understanding relationship between the pet and it's family.

• 12/03 to present: Sole Proprietor of Pet Expertise offering positive dog training advice and products.

• 03/02 - 10/03: Groomer and trainer at Best Friends dog center in Sudbury MA.

• 04/01- 10/03: Sole proprietor of The Creature Teacher dog training business. Worked with several hundred dogs and their people.

• 05/01 - 03/02: Customer service representative and dog trainer for Best Friends in Ashland MA.

• 10/99- 09/01: Certified Group and Private Basic and Puppy Obedience Instructor with Animal Behavior Training Associates, Inc. (ABTA), teaching at Petcos.

• 10/07 - APDT- Five day dog training conference in Portland OR.

• 01/05 - Awarded a Counseling Certificate from the SF-SPCA after a 6-day intensive course.

• 01/04 - Clicker Expo- One day seminar in Berkeley CA.

• 03/03 - Ted Turner - Two-day seminar on aggression in Enfield MA.
